Why nurses NICU skills are the keys to keeping families at home in New Braunfels

Nurses at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels (CSRH – NB) have teamed up to provide more comprehensive care for babies born prematurely in the New Braunfels area.

Since the beginning of the year, registered nurses from the New Braunfels hospital have undergone extensive training in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Board-certified neonatologists with MEDNAX are also in place to care for infants born too soon or who may have special health care needs.

In addition, specially trained NICU nurses from The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio are working side-by-side with the nursing team at CSRH – NB to manage high risk infants through close monitoring of vital signs, assistance with feeding, 24-hour oxygen, stabilizing blood glucose levels, phototherapy, and intravenous and intravenous antibiotics.

“This partnership further solidifies our commitment to provide outstanding health care for families and babies in San Antonio, New Braunfels, and beyond,” said Elias Neujahr, President, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

“We are excited to partner with The Children’s Hospital, which gives our team the opportunity to provide expert care to premature babies in New Braunfels and the surrounding area. Our goal is to keep fragile newborns closer to their parents and their parents closer to home and extended family,” said Jim D. Wesson, President, CSRH – NB.

If necessary, newborns with medically complicated diagnoses can be transported from CSRH – NB (Level II) to the highest level NICU in the area (Level IV) at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

About CHRISTUS Santa Rosa

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System was founded in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The sisters heeded the call from the Catholic bishop of Texas to care for the multitude of sick, infirm, and orphaned in the Texas frontier. When the sisters arrived in San Antonio, the population was only 12,000 and there was no public hospital - until the sisters founded CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital.
